The City of Columbia Street Division is participating in Winter Weather Awareness Day on Wednesday, November 18 by having equipment operators practice dry runs on priority routes and through neighborhoods.

Steven Sapp, a communications specialist for Columbia Public Works, said the city has a few things they are hoping to accomplish on Winter Weather Awareness Day.

First, the street division is are having their annual driver orientation and safety training. This will train their drivers, who haven’t experienced these type of conditions before, on all of the best and safest ways to operate the equipment in winter conditions.

Sapp said they are also hoping to educate the public. He said this involves placing notifications on cars parked along snow routes stating that when there is snow of more than two inches cars will be prohibited from parking on those routes.

John Hotz, the director of the public information and education division of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, offered some advice on how to combat winter road conditions.

“We do recommend if people slide off of the highway to stay inside your vehicle,” he said. “If one person has slid off in that area, there’s a chance that somebody else could and if you’re inside your vehicle you have a lot better chance of surviving getting struck by another car then if you are outside walking around.”
