Why, Yes, That Is Sunshine Edition ft. Picnics, Pictures and Puppies

Mar 30, 2012

The kids might have the whole week off, but you have something better: the weekend. Soak up some sun this weekend and pretend you're on spring break, too. Visit the vineyards. Run a 5K. Adopt a new pup--anything to stay in the sun!

A-Frame Grand Re-Opening at Les Bourgeois Vineyards (Sat, 3 p.m.)

Time to scrounge up some picnic baskets. Spring is here. Head to the best picnic spot in Mid-Missouri: The A-Frame at Les Bourgeois Vineyards at Les Bourgeois Vineyards near Rocheport. Opening day is Saturday. “It’s kind of a celebration of spring coming and the A-Frame season starting,” says Rachel Mills, marketing director for Les Bourgeois. So, pack a picnic and rate the sunset over the Missouri River. And if you’re not in the picnic-packing mood, try something from A-Frame’s new menu, like the PAB&J (that’s Almond Peanut Butter) and the Legacy Grass Fed Beef Hot Link. And there's always staples like beer cheese fondue. Yum.

Winter Exhibit at Perlow-Stevens Gallery (Fri-Sat, 11 a.m.)

A rocket ships blasts off behind a buffalo. Gorillas and house cats hang out in a field. These are just two of Kevin Ritchie’s paintings, which combine a traditional approach--painting--with unique subject matter--rocket ships and buffalo. Check out these and other artwork at Perlow-Stevens Gallery in the last days of the Winter Exhibit. The Spring Exhibit starts April 4 with all new artwork and artists.

Mega Match-A-Thon (Sun, 10 a.m.)

Find your perfect pet at the Mega Match-A-Thon hosted by No Kill Columbia. “Imagine e-harmony for animal adoption,” says Michelle Bird, No Kill Columbia board member. Fill out a short survey at the event and get matched with an animal based on your personality preferences. Approximately 166 dogs and 102 cats are waiting to be matched. Will you find love?

Earth Hour (Sat, 8:30 p.m.)

Turn off the lights for Earth Hour this Saturday. All the cool kids are doing it. More than 5,200 cities in 135 countries around the world participated last year, according to earthhour.org. If Jesse Hall, the Columbia Public Library and the Boone Building can embrace darkness for an hour, then you can, too.

Rain's 19th Annual Salute to Life Walk, 5k and 10k runs (Sun, 7:30 a.m.)
