Winter wheat farmers face pressure; new ballooning record set in Antarctica

This week, we'll hear how some winter wheat farmers are faring in the new year, and talk to a researcher that helped set a new ballooning record in Antarctica.

Last year was one for the record books. It was the warmest year ever recorded in many cities throughout the Midwest. The question on many minds is whether 2013 will be any different. With a crop in the ground, winter wheat farmers need things to change in a hurry. But as Harvest Public Media's Grant Gerlock reports, climatologists aren’t so sure that will happen.

Later in the show, we'll explore how a ballooning record was set recently in Antarctica.

The two-ton Super TIGER balloon has now been afloat for over 45 days, breaking the previous record on the frozen continent. The balloon carries equipment that collects data about cosmic rays from deep in the universe.

Ryan Murphy is a graduate student at Washington University in St. Louis, and is part of the science team in Antarctica. He spoke with KRCU's Jacob McCleland via Skype.

Rehman Tungekar is a former producer for KBIA, who left at the beginning of 2014.
