Originally published on Mon March 31, 2014 3:53 pm

In this Vintage Cafe session from 2011, singer-songwriter Ryan Adams had just released the album Ashes & Fire. Adams had taken a couple years off between recording his last record with The Cardinals and this one. At the time, the delay was unusual for the prolific singer-songwriter, though he did put out a vinyl-only metal record called Orion. He also spent time relearning how to play guitar after a serious hand injury.

In the 1960s, the Zombies enjoyed success as one of the most popular bands of the British Invasion, releasing the enduring and beloved hits "Time of the Season," "Tell Her No" and "She's Not There." Although the group initially split amicably in 1968, the Zombies returned to making music in various incarnations in the early '90s. This year, two of its founding members, Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent, released Breathe Out, Breathe In, which the veteran musicians say is the first album that makes them feel truly together again as a band.

The story of Beirut, the sweetly melancholy musical venture of Zach Condon, is like something out of a movie. The New Mexico native dropped out of college in 2006 to focus on writing and recording music. He produced Gulag Orkestar, celebrating old-world weirdness and nostalgia with bawdy Balkan organ pumps and trumpets. The album sparked a meteoric rise for the young artist.
