Columbia City Council approves mayor's plan to form crime taskforce

  The Columbia City Council approved a proposal from Mayor Bob McDavid to create a taskforce to look at youth crimes in the city by a vote of six in favor to none against. Councilmember Ian Thomas did not attend the meeting.

McDavid announces plan to reduce crime in Columbia

Speaking before a crowded conference room at City Hall, Columbia Mayor Bob McDavid opened his press this morning conference bluntly.

"Columbia has too much crime," he said, as a slide behind him read the same.  "Nobody here disputes that."

Crime in Columbia has been a growing concern among residents and government officials – so much so that McDavid has come up with a six-point plan he thinks could lessen violent crime in Columbia.

Columbia leaders consider curfew following spate of shootings

Columbia's police chief is calling for a teen curfew after a recent spate of shootings that has city leaders and many residents on edge. Chief Ken Burton says he will develop a formal proposal for City Council consideration within the next month. Burton spoke today at a City Hall news conference along with Columbia's mayor and five council members.

Drug-related shooting kills one in east Columbia

The most recent shooting in Columbia happened in the parking lot outside of El Maguey restaurant off of Conley Road.

Another shooting in a highly trafficked area of Columbia has left one man dead.

Around 11 o’clock Sunday night,  25-year-old Anthony M. Unger was shot and killed in the parking lot at the northwest corner of Conley and Brickton roads. That parking lot houses El Maguey Mexican restaurant and Robinsons Cleaners.

Who's behind the Columbia downtown-shooting video?

The Columbia Police Department is continuing to investigate a shooting in downtown Columbia Saturday night.  Shortly after midnight on Saturday morning, three young men were shot near the intersection of 10th Street and Broadway.  While the incident has some concerned about the safety of Columbia’s downtown area, a video of the shooting captured by a bystander has sparked a reaction from many residents.
