Columbia’s new council members look ahead

Fourth Ward council member Ian Thomas is sworn in during a special Columbia City Council meeting on April 8, 2013.

Karl Skala and Ian Thomas were sworn into office at a special city council meeting Monday evening in Columbia.

Fourth Ward Council member Ian Thomas said he wants to bring a more research based and analytical approach to policy making to the council. Thomas said he’s looking forward to working on finding a solution to the Providence Road congestion problem.

Third Ward Council member Karl Skala said he has many plans for the future.

Hartzler, McDavid call for funding to keep airport tower open

A U.S. Congress member was not an airplane passenger at the Columbia Regional Airport on Tuesday. Instead, she visited to draw attention to an important safety issue.

Rep. Vicky Hartzler of Missouri’s Fourth District said she does not agree with the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision to close the air traffic control tower at the airport.

Mayor Bob McDavid asks for an apology for offensive Facebook post

Columbia Mayor Bob McDavid said he would like the Columbia Police Officers Association to issue a formal apology after an offensive status update was posted on the organization’s Facebook page this week.  

The Wednesday Facebook status joked about the police department’s possible acquisition of an armored Mercedes— and about the reaction from the “boys in the hood.”  The post has since been taken down.
