Rain gauge system proposed for Columbia sewer problems

A retired sewer division superintendent is urging Columbia to invest in high-tech rain gauges that would allow people to monitor rainfall online in real-time.

Former city employee Bill Weitkemper attended an Energy and Environment Commission meeting Tuesday night to urge commission members to bring the issue to City Council.

Columbia electrical-line project expected to impact utility rates

Columbia’s southern region is in need of new electrical transmission lines because of the region’s population increase – and Columbia’s Water and Light Department and City Council are discussing options for the region.

Representatives from the Department and council met yesterday (Thursday) afternoon to discuss one project that would create new transmission lines. Water and Light staff have proposed three line options to the council.

Officials say regardless of the option chosen residents should expect to see a utility-rate increase for the project.

A thunderstorm producing hail and capable of tornadoes hit the Mid-Missouri area on Wednesday evening. While Columbia experienced minimal power outages, citizens of Monroe, Missouri had no power Thursday morning.

Earth Hour organizers say it's about more than electricity

The City of Columbia is encouraging people to turn off the lights in their homes and buildings this Saturday in celebration of the annual Earth Hour event. Earth Hour is a global program that promotes energy savings, and Columbia has participated in it each year since 2008.
