The Columbia Police Department announced Tuesday that four officers are joining the Community Outreach Unit.

Three nights a week, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., half a dozen St. Louis clergy members walk the streets in a line.

Led by Rev. Ken McKoy of the Progressive A.M.E Zion Church, they visit the Fountain Park and Lewis Place neighborhoods to act as a “ministry of presence,” as McKoy calls it. It’s a violence prevention effort that began on a grassroots level and is now on the cusp of expanding. McKoy calls it NightLIFE.

The United Way of Central Missouri raised more money than it planned to during this year’s Community Fundraising Campaign. The United Way’s goal was $1.65 million and it raised $1.7 million.  Ann Bax, President of the United Way of Central Missouri, said the money raised will be allocated among the 25 agencies they serve.

“We’ve tried to partner with agencies that kind of fit together like a puzzle and address all of the needs that are here in our community that we serve," Bax said.
