The St. Joseph City Council is considering an ordinance to end some court fees.

Court fees – which came under Justice Department criticism after the unrest in Ferguson – are getting attention again.

In a press release issued Wednesday, Gov. Jay Nixon thanked the Missouri Bar for backing his veto of two bills that would have raised some court fees.

Senate Bill 67 and House Bill 799 would have added new fees to court cases to help pay for building and maintaining new and existing county jails around the state.

Missouri's Republican-led Legislature put a priority on cutting taxes this year. But the same lawmakers who passed a $700 million income tax cut also approved numerous little-known fee increases.

One of those measures could increase fees on driver's licenses and vehicle registrations, costing Missourians almost $22 million annually. Another bill would impose fees on mailed-in speeding traffic tickets, affecting an estimated 170,000 cases annually.

Earlier this week, KBIA told you the City of Moberly has paid at least $677,000 in court fees since the Mamtek sucralose factory failed in 2010, including at least $60,000 in fees so far in April. Today, the Moberly Monitor-Index is reporting the city and its development authority have both been dismissed from a case being brought against them by Mamtek bondholders.
