Lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle agree that Missouri's state hospital for the most severely ill and dangerous mental health patients is in dire need of repair, but it remains unclear just how to come up with the more than $200 million needed to replace the crumbling Fulton State Hospital.

Senate Bill 9 veto overridden by Missouri legislature

The recent veto over-ride by the Missouri State Legislative of Senate Bill 9 will enact changes to the state’s animal abuse and neglect laws. As part of the legislation, it will now be considered a felony to steal cattle.

Senator David Pearce is a Republican representing Missouri’s 14th district. He says it was important for the Bill to be passed to provide protection for livestock owners.

The Missouri Senate has given preliminary approval to a bill that would study the cost of making insurance companies provide coverage for eating disorders.

A joint committee of Missouri House and Senate members is considering an overhaul of how the state’s colleges and universities are funded each year.  A first draft of recommendations was released today, and it includes basing 10 percent of an institution’s state funding on performance standards such as graduation rates.

Legislation that would tweak Missouri’s funding formula for public schools has stalled in the State Senate.  

A task force is recommending that funding for universities and community colleges in Missouri be based in part on graduation rates and other performance-based criteria.
