House Approves More Lawmaker Control of Missouri Capitol

 Missouri lawmakers have voted to give themselves more control over the Capitol's renovations and security.

The House passed two bills Thursday that would create a commission to supervise the Capitol building and its police, security protocols and parking, as well as the adjacent government buildings. Those areas are currently under the supervision of the Office of Administration and the Department of Public Safety.

About $1 million in Missouri taxpayer money is set to go to an education nonprofit tasked with helping at-risk St. Louis youth.

Governor Jay Nixon has vetoed a bill that he said would have given some corporate security officers new powers to act like police anywhere in the state.

Local advocates are striving to get the heroin problem in Missouri under control.The Missouri Recovery Network and Roosevelt University in Chicago conducted a study of heroin use. They found more people sought treatment for heroin and opiates than for methamphetamines in Missouri.

Gov. Jay Nixon's administration says three people have been killed in severe storms that swept across southern Missouri.

Nixon cited the three fatalities in a news release as he headed to view the damage.
