Columbia and Jefferson City public schools see enrollment surge

As public school starts Thursday in both Columbia and Jefferson City, those school districts are dealing with a surge in student enrollment. To deal with this, the districts have hired several teachers at the last minute to maintain a healthy ratio of students to instructors.

Although enrollment numbers are expected to fluctuate for the next few weeks, Columbia and Jefferson City have added several teachers at the elementary level to accommodate the influx of younger students.

Missouri higher education officials plan conference

Officials of Missouri colleges and universities will gather next week for a day-long conference on issues including finances and academic quality.

The state Coordinating Board for Higher Educations is sponsoring the June 7 meeting in Columbia. It's expected to draw about 100 top administrators and members of governing boards, along with leaders of national organizations.

Out-of-state applicants at record high for MU

The University of Missouri’s out-of-state applications outnumbered in-state applications for the first time in the school’s history. Vice Provost for Enrollment Manager Ann Korschgen said the recent rise is thanks to an increased recruitment the country, as well as the school's reputation.

Increasing enrollment rates strain university mental health systems

As enrollment rates increase at universities across the country, counselors say they face more difficulties handling student mental health concerns.  And as KBIA’s Scott Kanowsky reports, the University of Missouri system is feeling the strain as well.
