Republican former U.S. Senate candidate John Brunner says he is contemplating a run for Missouri governor in 2016.
Brunner told The Associated Press on Friday that he has received encouragement to run but doesn't plan to make a decision until after the 2014 elections.
His comments came several days after former U.S. attorney and Missouri House Speaker Catherine Hanaway announced her Republican candidacy for governor. Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich is another potential Republican candidate, but he first faces re-election this year.
State Senator Mike Kehoe (center) and Gov. Jay Nixon (right) announced an agreement between Jefferson City and the State of Missouri to fund renovations of the historic Missouri State Penitentiary on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013. The landmark prison closed in September 2013 after an inspection revealed mold in public areas. The new project will evenly split costs up to $2,000,000 between the state and the city.
A proposed amendment to the state constitution would require candidates for governor and lieutenant governor to run as a ticket, just as the president and vice president do. Senators debated the measure but set it aside Tuesday.
