Columbia Values Diversity Celebration marks legacy of MLK – and this year, Eliot Battle

The winners of this year's Columbia Values Diversity Awards both have close ties to education – and to longtime Columbia educator Eliot Battle, who died last year. 

The awards, which are given out at the annual Columbia Values Diversity Celebration, honor those who have helped the community better appreciate diversity and cultural understanding. It's also a chance to remember the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

CPS redistricts Mill Creek Elementary area

On Monday, Columbia Public Schools decided to redistrict the area around Mill Creek Elementary School, which means next year, about 100 students will be switching to either Grant, Paxton Keeley or Russell Boulevard Elementary Schools.

Yellow lines painted to ameliorate parking problems near Grant Elementary

Columbia Public Works Department workers recently painted yellow lines to restrict parking along Crestmere and South Garth Avenue.

Crestmere Avenue residents are frustrated at the parking situation on their street. Library patrons and parents with children in Grant Elementary school park on the street, leaving no room for residents. Workers painted the yellow lines after a resident asked their council representative to review the situation. Public Works Department Engineer Richard Stone said the yellow lines provide information to motorists.
