  The students in Mrs. Neales’ class were all smiles as they sat on the music-themed rug, merrily strumming their ukuleles while the rest of the class sang along.

The ten ukuleles were purchased through a $625 grant by the Links of Learning program. This program awarded over $98,000 to Columbia area teachers this year.

Biomedical research teams receive grants

The University of Missouri awarded $600,000 to biomedical research teams at the Reynolds Alumni Center on Tuesday. The grants are part of the University’s Coulter Translational Partnership Program, which supports innovations by faculty in the MU School of Medicine and College of Engineering.

Governor Nixon announced Monday that the nonprofit group USA Funds will give Missouri $2 million in grants to improve its higher education system. This money will go towards improving the state’s higher education affordability and innovation.

  Through a $1 million grant, USA Funds will help to expand the Missouri Innovation Campus initiative. This program establishes partnerships between high schools, community colleges, four-year colleges, universities and area businesses.

2013 has been the third year for a nursing grant program -- aimed to assist college and university nursing programs in Missouri.

Missouri officials are preparing to award nine grants worth nearly $9 million to create so-called "Innovation Campuses" involving colleges and universities.

The program pairs universities and colleges with businesses to train students for jobs in high-demand fields. It's partly aimed at helping students earn their degrees faster and graduate with less debt.

Gov. Jay Nixon planned to discuss the grants Wednesday at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri State University in Springfield and Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.
