As states tighten gun restrictions, two central Missouri mayors seek to attract gun business

The mayors of Hallsville and Centralia, along with one Missouri legislator, have reached out to gun and ammunition manufacturers in an effort to attract those businesses as other states tighten gun restrictions.

State Representative Caleb Rowden said the decision to reach out to gun businesses is about improving the economy.

“This is a matter of jobs,” Rowden said. “If this was a different industry where it was so public that it made national news that these companies need relieving, I would have sent the same letter with some different bullet points.”

This week we decided to look further into the state statutes that determine what personal information is public and shareable, and what information isn’t.

In the ongoing saga over the state providing federal investigators with a list of 163,000 concealed carry permit holders in the state, the fallout continues. Republican Senator Kurt Schaefer of Columbia says Missouri’s Division of Motor Vehicles will remain unfunded in proposals for next year’s state budget unless the Nixon Administration cooperates with his committee’s investigation into the matter. The Director of the Department of Revenue resigned just over a week ago amid the controversy over the closed records.

Newtown, Conn., is a white-collar community an hour and a half northeast of New York City. It's the kind of place where crime is rare and the biggest thing that happens each year is the Labor Day parade.

Now the peace and quiet has been shattered, and residents are trying to make sense of what's happened.

Hours after the shootings that left so many people dead, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church opened its doors for a prayer vigil. People filed through the streets and past houses decorated with Christmas lights.

It’s a commonplace that high profile shootings like the ones in Colorado and Wisconsin can drive gun sales up.  Campaign politics have an effect too.  This week we’ll take a look at the gun industry and find out just what influences gun sales in Missouri.

At a recent gun show in St. Louis, there are about 30 or so tables crammed into the hotel conference room.  That’s 30 different vendors all competing with each other to sell guns, knives and accessories.  If you’re a buyer looking for a deal, there’s no better place to be.
