U.S. Representative Visits Hickman High School

U.S. Representative Vicky Hartzler visited Hickman High School in Columbia on Monday.

United States Representative, Vicky Hartzler (R), of the Fourth District was in Columbia Monday, Oct. 21, touring Hickman High School.

The congresswoman spoke about the stalemate in Washington during the partial government shutdown.

Hartzler did her student teaching at Hickman in the family and consumer sciences department when she was an education student at M-U, and on Monday she toured the career services wing.

For George Frissell, giving students the opportunity to talk to Champa Lhunpo, a Tibetan monk, for the past 15 years has been a highlight of the world religions course he teaches at Hickman High School.

“Here’s someone who was a member of the Dalai Lama’s own monastery, and offers them [students] perhaps a perspective that’s one that they really can’t get from a book or from watching a video,” Frissell said.

Grants for innovation awarded to Columbia teachers

The Columbia Public Schools Foundation awarded more than 61 thousand dollars in grants for the 2013-2014 school year at a reception at Hickman High School Wednesday evening. Community Relations Director for Columbia Public Schools Michelle Baumstark says the grants provide opportunities for education that the district could not afford in the regular budget.

Hickman principal to take leave of absence

Hickman High School announced today that Principal Tracey Conrad will be taking an indefinite leave of absence.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that Conrad's absence is due to a family concern.

Assistant principal Eric Johnson will serve as the school's interim principal until Conrad returns.

Columbia high schools to get food truck for lunch service

A food truck will soon be part of the lunch time choices for students at Columbia high schools.

The district says the truck will bring more food options and help with overcrowded lunch rooms at its high schools. The district ordered the truck on Monday.

Laina Fullum is the nutrition services director for the district. She says the pork and chicken offered on the truck will meet U.S. Department of Agriculture standards for school lunches and will be available for the free or reduced-lunch program.

The 15th case of whooping cough has been reported in Boone County. Columbia Public Schools are working to prevent further cases of whooping cough after a confirmed case in the school district.

Rock Bridge, Hickman High Schools cancel joint homecoming parade

Rock Bridge High School and Hickman High School changed their homecoming tradition this year due to a big weekend for MU.

Both Rock Bridge and Hickman canceled their joint homecoming parade on Oct. 13. The schools expect a large crowd downtown because MU plays No. 1 Alabama, and continued construction on Broadway. Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Chris Belcher says safety of the students is the main reason for the cancelation.
