Columbia, Jefferson City schools closed Wednesday

Columbia Public Schools will not be in session Wednesday.  It will be the district’s third consecutive day with a snow cancelation. In an email, Jefferson City Public Schools also announced that classes were canceled.

Lawsuit filed against Jefferson City Public Schools

A federal lawsuit accuses the Jefferson City school district and two administrators of not doing enough to prevent a band teacher from having an affair with a student.

The band teacher, Christopher Knehans, pleaded guilty in 2012 to two felony counts of sexual contact with a student.

Summer vacation ends soon for students

The dog days of summer are over for many students in the area, and will be ending quickly for many more. The fall semesters at the University of Missouri, Stephens College and Columbia College all begin on Monday.

All students in Columbia Public Schools go back tomorrow, except for kindergarteners, who get a few more days of summer and start school this Thursday.

Thursday also marks the start date for Jefferson City Public Schools.

Moberly students return to school this Wednesday.

Students in Fulton and Kirksville started last week.

Jefferson City school board members look forward to implementation of iPads for freshman

Jefferson City's Board of Education has plans to put iPads into the hands of the incoming high school freshman class of 20-14 – 20-15. 

At its regular meeting Monday night, board members said they were enthusiastic about the new policy.

Jefferson City Schools Superintendent Brian Mitchell said he is confident in his students to use the technology to the best of their abilities, without allowing it to create distractions.

Safety and security on public school grounds has become a prominent issue in several school districts following the recent school shootings in Newtown, Conn. Jefferson City Public Schools, the Hallsville School District, and the Fayette R3 School District are all asking for more tax money to improve school safety.

Water main break disrupts Jefferson City

Repairs have been completed after a broken water main caused disruptions in Jefferson City.

Missouri American Water says a 6-inch main broke Tuesday morning and that repairs wrapped up Tuesday afternoon. A boil advisory remains in effect. Missouri American has about 10,000 customers in Jefferson City.

Jefferson City schools discuss real world situations in standardized testing

The Jefferson City Board of Education wants to implement a new test to better prepare its students for the future.

Members of the administration discussed a new format of a standardized test for eighth graders that would require them to answer in-depth questions about a given story.

Jefferson City Superintendent Brian Mitchell believes this new assessment will help both students and board members.

"Clickers" could come to Jefferson City Public Schools

Jefferson City officials are considering the use of “clickers” – an interactive teaching device.

The Jefferson City School Board met last night  to discuss how the devices could benefit teachers.

Sharla Buthod is the Library Coordinator for Jefferson City public schools. She says the “clickers” would give teachers a better idea of how students are learning during lessons.

Jefferson City Schools announce belief statement

Leaders in the Jefferson City Public School District have drawn up a statement of seven beliefs that they think will better define Jefferson City Public Schools and drive student success. David Luther is the Assistant Superintendent with the school district. He was also at the retreat last week where leaders worked on the list.

“The discussion was very good – it was pretty intense," Luther said.

Leaders began with about 20 statements. Luther says their goal was to boil down the ideas to eliminate redundancy.
