The Springfield Police Department will soon begin sending some of the city's inmates to jails in two other counties.

A Springfield city report on the local judicial system says nearly 3,000 crimes have gone virtually unpunished since Greene County's sheriff announced in April he would no longer accept municipal prisoners at the county jail.

Six Muslim inmates held in the Greene County jail have filed a federal complaint against the sheriff and other deputies, claiming religious discrimination.

The Springfield News-Leader reports the inmates say in a handwritten complaint filed July 24 in federal court that they've been denied congregational prayer, access to religious materials and sufficient space for daily prayers.
