KC business leader support KCI changes

Kansas City business leaders told an advisory group that Kansas City International Airport has become outdated and gives visitors a mediocre first impression.

Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce president Jim Heeter told the KCI Terminal Advisory Group on Tuesday that many chamber members want a more modern airport that will appeal to businesses.

Group wants improvements at Kansas City International Airport

A group has delivered more signatures on a petition aimed at forcing a public vote on a proposal to rebuild Kansas City International Airport.

Citizens for Responsible Government/Friends of KCI delivered nearly 1,600 more petition signatures to City Hall on Monday.

The Kansas City Star reports the signatures delivered Monday now have to be checked by the election board.

Kansas City airport to get expedited screening

Security checks at the Kansas City International Airport apparently will be quicker soon for some passengers.

The Transportation Security Agency announced Thursday that KCI will be among 60 U.S. airports that will install its PreCheck expedited screening program, beginning Oct. 1.

The expedited screening allows qualified passengers to avoid removing shoes, belt and outerwear such as a jacket. They also won't have to remove laptops or quart-sized plastic bag for gels, liquids and aerosols from their luggage.

KCI officials mull terminal replacement

Opinions are divided about the potential $1.2 billion price for replacing the current three-terminal configuration at Kansas City International Airport with a single terminal.

The Kansas City StarĀ reports that critics say the price is too high and that many people like the current setup.

But Aviation director Mark VanLoh says that if the airport doesn't rebuild, it still needs an estimated $600 million in upgrades and renovations in the next few years. That includes $160 million in airfield and de-icer improvements.
