In the last six months alone, Missouri hospitals have eliminated nearly 1,000 jobs, imposed hiring freezes affecting another 2,145 positions and cut or delayed at least $50 million in building projects.
The blame is due, in part, to the General Assembly’s refusal to expand Medicaid.
Democratic Governor Jay Nixon on Wednesday warned Republican lawmakers that he’ll lay off state workers if full funding isn’t restored to the budget for the Missouri Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicles division.
In some of the first higher education layoffs announced this year in reaction to state funding reductions, Northwest Missouri State University will cut 20 jobs and eliminate or reorganize eight academic departments in a campus-wide move to reduce costs.
