A Macon county community food pantry is set to open up shop in a new spot Tuesday.

The larger space for Macon County Ministries Emergency Food Pantry and Monthly Food Distribution should make it possible for the organization to store a wider variety of food, including fresh produce, for its growing number of clients. Emergency Food Pantry Coordinator Linda Truitt says the new facility and its amenities will give clients more choices.

“We’re going to be able to offer much better food, a better quality, more nutritious, better variety and all of the above,” Truitt said.

A native of a small northeast Missouri town who died in Afghanistan will be forever remembered in his hometown.

The town of La Plata unveiled a warrior's cross memorial at a city park during the weekend to honor Pvt. 1st Class Adam Thomas.

Thomas joined the Army after graduating from La Plata High in 2000. He was on his second tour of duty with the 10th Mountain Division when he was killed during an ambush a decade ago.

Missouri deer hunters who head out during the fall season are being asked to help the state determine the spread of chronic wasting disease, especially in northern counties.

The Department of Conservation will take tissue samples from Sept. 15 through Jan. from deer killed in Adair, Chariton, Linn, Macon, Randolph and Sullivan counties. Hunters are asked to take their deer to collection points that will be set up in those areas.

Joe Jerek is a spokesperson for the MDC. He says it’s easy for hunters to get samples and it’s crucial to the MDC’s containment efforts.

Missouri conservation officials are holding a public meeting Saturday to discuss a disease affecting deer in the northern part of the state.
