Players compete for the spotlight at Missouri's Pro Day

Fifteen former University of Missouri football players participated in Missouri’s Pro Day Thursday in their last chance for national exposure before the National Football League draft. The players participated in drills similar to the NFL Combine, such as the 40 yard dash and 225 lbs. bench press.

Talking Politics: Missouri mulls LGBT changes

  Last week, it was hard to miss the huge news coming out of Columbia.

Former University of Missouri defensive lineman Michael Sam came out to ESPN last week. He could be the first openly gay NFL player after the draft in May.

"I'm not afraid to tell the world who I am. I'm Michael Sam: I'm a college graduate. I'm African American, and I'm gay," Sam said. "I'm comfortable in my skin."

After the news broke Sunday evening that Missouri defensive lineman Michael Sam is gay, Sports Illustrated published an article with the opinions of several anonymous NFL executives who said his decision to come out might hurt his NFL prospects. One said he doesn’t think football is ready for a gay player, and another said having a gay player in the locker room would be a big distraction.

But it wasn’t a problem this past season at MU, where the Tigers finished ranked fifth in the country even after Sam told them he was gay at the beginning of the season.

National Football League prospect Michael Sam publicly came out over the weekend. Although some critics have expressed concern about the league being ready for a publicly gay player, Sam’s former college coach says he hopes Sam’s new team treats him like his college team.  

University of Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel says he’s proud of the courage Sam has shown by announcing he’s gay. Sam is an all-American and co-defensive player of the year in the Southeastern Conference.

In a Sunday 'New York Times' feature, MU football's former defensive lineman Michael Sam, says he is gay, and that he's already come out to his fellow team mates, who voted him most valuable player. The 'New York Times' reports this is the first time Sam's spoken publicly about being gay.
Coaches at the University of Missouri divided players into small groups at a preseason football practice last year for a team-building exercise. One by one, players were asked to talk about themselves - where they grew up, why they chose Missouri and what others might not know about them.
