CPS investigates First Student bus driver after arrest

  Columbia Public Schools were notified Friday, March 14 and began investigating an incident where a bus driver hit a Shepard Boulevard Elementary School student inside the bus.

As soon as Shepard Boulevard Elementary School heard about the incident, the principal began reviewing surveillance tapes capturing the incident inside the bus. Columbia Public Schools spokesperson, Michelle Baumstark, says, it was at this point that the principal felt it was necessary to notify Columbia police.

Columbia Public Schools renews bus contract

The Columbia School Board is renewing its yearly contract with First Student. The transportation system for elementary and high school students is constantly changing to make the out-of-school environment as pleasant as possible.

First Student Manager Craig Caldwell said the recent change from a two tier system to a three tier system is expected to prevent tension on the buses.

Grants for innovation awarded to Columbia teachers

The Columbia Public Schools Foundation awarded more than 61 thousand dollars in grants for the 2013-2014 school year at a reception at Hickman High School Wednesday evening. Community Relations Director for Columbia Public Schools Michelle Baumstark says the grants provide opportunities for education that the district could not afford in the regular budget.

MU researchers receive funding for science teaching program

According to an article in the journal Science, 60 percent of teachers are “cautious” when teaching science. But the National Science Foundation has recently approved a grant that will help Missouri teachers build confidence on teaching the subject.

Newtown tragedy brings safety plans into focus for Columbia Schools

Following today’s fatal school shootings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Columbia Public Schools administrators have spent the day discussing safety strategies and offering assurance to principals, educators and parents.

Columbia Public Schools spokesperson Michelle Baumstark called today’s incident a “nightmare” – but one that schools have to prepare for: "You know we really hope that we never ever have to use the emergency plans, but it is important to have those in place."
