MU skeptics group brings big-name atheists to campus

A conference this weekend -- the first conference ever hosted by the student skeptics organization at MU -- brought in well-known atheist speakers from around the country.

The conference, SashaCon, had been in-the-works since summer. It all started when MU SASHA (Skeptics, Atheists, Secular Humanists and Agnostics) heard the story of Faisal Saeed Al-Mutar, an up-and-coming atheist speaker who first came to the U.S. as a refugee from Iraq.

Chabad marks end of Hanukkah with giant menorah lighting

The lighting of a giant menorah marked the final day of Hanukkah on Wednesday night at Tiger Plaza.

Hosted by Chabad, about 35 people attended this year’s event.

“Chabad is a Jewish organization for Jewish students on campus,” Rabbi Averham Lapine said. “It’s mainly MU students, but everyone is welcome.”

This is the MU Chabad chapter’s second year of hosting a public menorah lighting. The ceremony included blessings by the rabbi, Hanukkah songs, traditional food and even dreidel-shaped glasses.

Student group "Antlers" kicked out of second straight MU basketball game

A University of Missouri student fan group was kicked out of its second straight men's basketball game over what school officials call a pattern of inappropriate chants.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that members of The Antlers were ejected from Mizzou Arena on Monday night early in the second half of Missouri's 78-64 win over IUPUI.

NCAA suspends MU coach Frank Haith for 5 games for violations at Miami

Current Missouri men’s basketball coach and former Miami coach Frank Haith has been suspended for the first five regular season games of the season as penalty for his actions in the two year long Nevin Shapiro scandal.

On Tuesday, the NCAA handed out sanctions for its case against the University of Miami that involved former boosters and convicted felon Nevin Shapiro.

Haith will miss games against Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 8), Southern Illinois (Nov. 12), Hawaii (Nov. 16), Gardner-Webb (Nov. 23) and IUPUI (Nov. 25).

Are the Hearnes Center's days numbered?

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports University of Missouri athletic director Mike Alden is considering the "future and the viability" of the 41-year-old Hearnes Center now that the school's men's and women's basketball teams call Mizzou Arena home.

Alden says the field house named for former Governor Warren Hearnes is expensive to maintain and has high energy costs. He acknowledged the real estate next to Memorial Stadium may have more value as the university modernizes its athletic facilities. Mizzou Arena opened in 2004.

Mizzou's Sheldon Richardson picked in 1st round of NFL draft

The New York Jets picked Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson with the 13th overall pick in the NFL draft Thursday night.

The Jets and coach Rex Ryan loaded up on defense in the first round after also taking Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner with the No. 9 pick. New York acquired the 13th pick from Tampa Bay for cornerback Darrelle Revis on Sunday.

MU designated driver program faces budget cuts

The STRIPES program designed to provide a safe ride for MU students on weekends is facing a potential budget cut. According to the Missouri Student Association, the program is set to receive about $10,000 less than what it expected. Because of the cuts in allocation, the STRIPES program is now responsible for its own funding. MSA Director of Student Communications Jimmy Hibsch says that if the budget is cut, STRIPES will have to look for other ways to fundraise, but believes they will not have any trouble in doing so.

Miami has finally received its notice of allegations from the NCAA, a long-awaited document accuses the Hurricanes of a “lack of institutional control” within its athletic department.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that several former members of Miami coaching staffs are named in the notice of allegations, including Missouri basketball coach Frank Haith, who was with the Hurricanes from 2004-11.
