REDI doesn't support removal of Columbia postal center

The Board of Directors of Regional Economic Development Inc., or REDI, says it’s not ready for the U.S. Postal Service to cut jobs in Columbia.

The Postal Service currently is considering moving 42 of 133 Columbia postal employees to Kansas City or St. Louis, or possibly shutting the Columbia center down entirely.

Mail service in Columbia could slow down

Columbia residents may soon have to wait a little bit longer for their mail to arrive.

The U.S. Postal Service has put together an Area Mail Processing proposal to move some operations, including 91 Columbia jobs, to St. Louis and Kansas City. This is in large part due to a decrease of 53 billion pieces of mail during the past seven years, a fourth of the overall volume.

Despite storm, postal workers rally for Saturday delivery

Despite the winter storm, postal workers rallied against the proposed removal of Saturday deliveries.

Workers and supporters sloshed around in front of the Post Office’s main branch in downtown St. Louis, carrying signs that read “Missourians for 6 Day.”

“These people understand the importance of their job, the importance of delivering six days a week, and the role that we play in the community,” said Kevin Boyer, Missouri state president of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Postal Service studies Columbia processing center

The U.S. Postal Service is looking into moving some or all operations at the Columbia mail processing center to facilities in St. Louis and Kansas City.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports a study of how consolidation would affect service could take four to six months.
