The #MeToo movement has spread from the United States to other parts of the world as women have increasingly spoken out about sexual assault and sexual harassment.

One country where it has struggled is Japan, where discussions about sexual harassment and sexual assault remain highly taboo.

Japanese women are much less likely than their U.S. counterparts to describe non-consensual sex as rape. Further, women who publicly accuse their attackers often face significant public backlash. 

On this edition of Global Journalist, a look at the conversation around the #MeToo movement in Japan, a country known for its technological and economic prowess but that lags behind many other industrialized countries in measures of gender equity.


The Missouri Senate passed a bill that would make it easier to terminate a father's parental rights if the child was the result of rape.

The proposal, adopted Wednesday 31-1, would allow judges to terminate a father's parental rights if there was "clear, cogent, and convincing evidence" that he raped the mother, resulting in her pregnancy. The judge would also have to weigh whether termination would be in the child's best interest.

Springfield police are investigating the fifth rape reported this semester on the Missouri State University campus.

 Victims of rape and sexual assault can get orders of protection against their assailants under a new Missouri law.

The law takes effect today Friday. It expands who can file and receive orders of protection.

The former law allowed domestic violence victims and victims of stalking to receive protection orders.

Rolling Stone magazine says "there now appear to be discrepancies" in its story about a University of Virginia student who said she was gang-raped during a fraternity party in 2012, adding it had "come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced."

Many forces can drive a male college student to commit sexual assault. But one of the most important may be the company he keeps.
