The Columbia Board of Education debated a major change for one of its elementary schools at last night’s meeting. Lee Expressive Arts Elementary School, located in the heart of downtown Columbia, is attempting to follow the example set by Ridgeway Elementary and become an autonomous school operating within the Columbia Public School District.

Lee parent Candace Sall said she is excited for the changes to come.

Columbia’s Ridgeway Elementary and Battle High schools have jointly applied to a national voting competition for a grant to help fund ongoing educational programs. The Clorox Power a Bright Future grant program is granting a 50-thousand-dollar grand-prize to the school that receives the most votes on its website.

Columbia has lots of community gardens, and several school gardens. But school-community gardens? On Tuesday at Ridgewood Elementary, the school and community worked together to start planting the city's first community garden at a public school.

Today gardeners broke ground on Columbia's newest community garden. The plot of land at Ridgeway Elementary is the city's first community garden located at a public school.
