New security systems are being implemented throughout the Columbia Public Schools District.

Since the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting there have been 70 school shootings nationwide. With an increase in the number of shootings, the Columbia Public Schools District decided to upgrade security measures throughout all the schools in the district.

Columbia Schools spokesperson Michelle Baumstark says the district decided to increase security after annual district meetings in which they discussed possible changes that could be made.

For George Frissell, giving students the opportunity to talk to Champa Lhunpo, a Tibetan monk, for the past 15 years has been a highlight of the world religions course he teaches at Hickman High School.

“Here’s someone who was a member of the Dalai Lama’s own monastery, and offers them [students] perhaps a perspective that’s one that they really can’t get from a book or from watching a video,” Frissell said.

A food truck will soon be part of the lunch time choices for students at Columbia high schools.

The district says the truck will bring more food options and help with overcrowded lunch rooms at its high schools. The district ordered the truck on Monday.

Laina Fullum is the nutrition services director for the district. She says the pork and chicken offered on the truck will meet U.S. Department of Agriculture standards for school lunches and will be available for the free or reduced-lunch program.

The Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors hosted a ribbon-cutting event Tuesday to dedicate Rock Bridge High School’s new auxiliary gym. This project was part of the $120 million bond issue approved by voters in 2010.

The gym cost $4.1 million and seats 300 to 500 people. Its construction lasted less than a year, and many other projects funded by the 2010 bond issued remain in progress.

“We’ve been spending money just about as fast as we can to get the most out of our investment,” Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Chris Belcher said.

Rock Bridge High School and Hickman High School changed their homecoming tradition this year due to a big weekend for MU.

Both Rock Bridge and Hickman canceled their joint homecoming parade on Oct. 13. The schools expect a large crowd downtown because MU plays No. 1 Alabama, and continued construction on Broadway. Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Chris Belcher says safety of the students is the main reason for the cancelation.

The price of student lunches will go up 10 cents starting in the fall of 2012. A 2010 federal requirement says school districts must generate enough revenue to pay for the cost of lunches themselves.
