SEMA funds new tornado safe room in Morgan County

May 6, 2014

Morgan County R-2 School District has finalized plans for a new auditorium. The district will use a grant from the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency—or SEMA, to help finance the project. Plans for the new auditorium call for the building to double as a safe room for tornadoes.

When a tornado devastated Joplin in spring 2011, South Joplin Christian Church didn’t have a plan.

“The reality is that I remember no conversations where we said, ‘We could do this and this, and be prepared for part of our town being wiped off the map, for our church being damaged, and for many of our families losing their homes and businesses,” said Jill Michel, the church’s pastor. “There were no conversations that started that way.”

An emergency management team from Missouri is headed to New York to help manage volunteers and donations in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.

Governor Jay Nixon's office says the New York emergency management office asked for help from Missouri's State Emergency Management Agency. The request was made through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which is part of the nation's mutual aid system.
