Special elections yield results for Mid-Missouri towns, utilities

A few special elections in Mid-Missouri yesterday resulted in success for the towns and entities asking for new revenue.

In Ashland, voters approved a one half cent sales tax increase to go toward transportation projects in the town. The Boone County Clerk reports a voter turnout of just over 6 percent for two special elections, with the measure passing 86 to 65.

Special-elections bill gets first-round approval in House

The Missouri House has given first-round approval to legislation that would require special elections to fill vacancies in statewide offices.


If passed, House Bill 110 would only allow the Governor to appoint a temporary placeholder who would not be eligible to run in the special election.  House Speaker Pro-tem Jason Smith (R, Salem), the bill’s sponsor, says it’s not a deliberate swipe at Democratic Governor Jay Nixon.

Gov. Nixon to set special election for June 4

Gov. Jay Nixon plans to officially set the special election date on Wednesday.

Gov. Jay Nixon plans to set June 4 as the special election date to fill the vacant seat in the Eighth District in southeast Missouri.

Rep. Jo Ann Emerson sent Nixon a letter Tuesday notifying him that her resignation from the seat would be effective at 11:59 p.m.

Special-elections bill gets speedy passage in Mo. House committee

A Missouri House committee has overwhelmingly passed legislation that would require special elections to fill vacancies in statewide offices.

House Bill 110 would require special elections if the office of Lt. Governor or any other statewide office is suddenly vacated.  It would allow the Governor to only appoint a placeholder who would temporarily fill the office but not be eligible to run in the special election.  It’s sponsored by House Speaker Pro-tem Jason Smith (R, Salem).
