Dorial Green-Beckham and two teammates arrested; suspended one game

MU's student newspaper, The Maneater, reports that Dorial Green-Beckham, the country's number one recruit, was arrested for possession of marijuana Wednesday night. The team spokesman told reporters that Green-Beckham and teammates would be penalized one game.
Freshman receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, the former No. 1 recruit in the nation, along with two other Missouri football players were arrested on drug charges Wednesday night. Green-Beckham, freshman linebacker Torey Boozer and freshman receiver Levi Copelin were arrested just before midnight on charges of possession of 35 grams or less of marijuana, according to MU Police Department records.

MU Police warn of fake football tickets

Some Mizzou football fans got less than they bargained for at last Saturday’s game. MU Police received several reports of fraudulent tickets after the game against the University of Georgia. Those with fake tickets were turned away at the gate. MU Police Captain Brian Weimer says it’s only when you look at a real ticket next to a fake one that you may be able to tell the difference.

Some Columbia residents open homes to visiting SEC fans

Some Columbia homeowners are taking advantage of packed hotels this year by renting out their properties on home game football weekends. MU’s transition to the SEC has inspired a number of homeowners to open their homes for a weekend to visiting fans.

Dan Reidt, local property owner, decided to join the bandwagon after hearing about the money other renters were hoping to earn.

Missouri held talkative defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson out of media day Monday after the player's remarks about Georgia and the SEC in general.

After a question about whether he’d watched any of the Georgia game, this is how Richardson responded:

“I watched that game – turned it off, too," Richardson said. "It’s like watching Big 10 football – it’s old-man-football. So they have a Heisman candidate quarterback? Okay, so we’re going to get to him and do what we’re supposed to do.”

MU puts up Tiger logos on several overpasses

The University of Missouri received a minor facelift last week for its inaugural SEC season. Maintenance crews installed four new oval Tiger logos on both Providence road and College Avenue overpasses. Emily Janssen is the Director of Athletic Strategic Communications and marketing for the Mizzou Tigers. She says this was just another transition process for MU into the SEC.

Tiger Town canceled due to lack of funds

The Tiger Town events that were planned to be held in downtown Columbia this fall to correspond with two home football games have been canceled due to a lack of funding. In a press release, head organizer Greg Steinhoff said it took them substantially more time to define the event, leaving less time to sell the event to potential donators. He said that despite the hard work by the organizers they came up short of the financial commitments necessary to stage the event.

KC man dominates world of dominoes competition

A Kansas City man who is the top dominoes player in the world says the game teaches life lessons that are important for young people to learn.

Jerome Wooten recently won his fourth world championship in dominoes in the last five years. Other players tell The Kansas City Star that Wooten's reputation makes him feared throughout the dominoes world.

Players push for longest baseball game

A group of baseball players is battling triple-digit heat in an effort to set the world record for the longest game ever played. The 52 players will try to compete for 60 hours. The game started at 7:00 Monday morning and is scheduled to end at 7:00 Thursday night.

Money raised will benefit Backstoppers, which supports the families of fallen first responders in the St. Louis area. Organizer and player Steve Pona says they thought about postponing the game due to the extreme weather

Missouri stadium expansion wins approval

With less than a week before the University of Missouri officially enters the Southeastern Conference, the UM board of curators has approved the first half of a project that Athletic Director Mike Alden says will “change the face” of the University of Missouri sports park. At a regular meeting yesterday, curators approved the $102 million project to expand and update athletic facilities on the Columbia campus.

Asst. basketball coach Ernie Nestor resigns

After only one season, coach Ernie Nestor is resigning as assistant coach of the MU men's basketball team. Sources told the Columbia Daily Tribune that head coach Frank Haith wanted Nestor to move into a more administrative position, but that he preferred to stay on court. He's expected to take a position at the Naval Acadamy where he'll be allowed to do just that.
Missouri assistant basketball coach Ernie Nestor is resigning his position after one season on Frank Haith's staff, a source confirmed Thursday morning, and he is expected to be named an assistant coach at Navy.

High school athletes at risk for concussions

 

Eight hundred and seventy one high school students suffered concussions during last fall, according to a new survey conducted by the Missouri State High School Activities Association. Unsurprisingly, 75 percent of those concussions happened to football players.  State lawmakers made this survey mandatory last year, so there isn’t any previous data with which to compare it.
