Starbucks Wants to Talk Race

On Monday, March 16, Starbucks announced a joint campaign with USA Today to promote conversations surrounding racial issues. Starbucks employees at more than 12,000 locations nationwide are writing "Race Together" on its cups and are encouraged to strike up conversations with customers about race. 

Missouri School of Journalism professors Amy Simons, Earnest Perry and Mike McKean discuss the issue on KBIA-FM's weekly media criticism program, "Views of the News."

Coffee giant Starbucks and USA Today have teamed up to start a nationwide conversation about race. Baristas as encouraged to write "#RaceTogether" on drink cups and initiate conversations with customers about racial issues. Friday, there will be a special section in the print editions of the USA Today. That supplement will also be available in Starbucks retail locations.

The building in Midtown which has become commonly known as the "Flying Saucer" will receive an award for its much-publicized transformation.

The Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation will recognize the effort at their Preservation Honor Awards ceremony on Feb. 27.

A Starbucks moved into the former gas station and Del Taco restaurant in Sep. 2012 and a Chipotle restaurant is expected to inhabit the other side of the building in the coming weeks.
