Nixon Proposes To Restore State Spending Lost Since 2008

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is proposing a budget that would set state government spending at roughly what it was seven years ago, before the nation’s economy – and the state’s budgets -- took a nose dive.

And that’s a huge difference from the frugal budgets the state has seen for years.

The biggest beneficiary of the increased spending, should the General Assembly agree, will be public education.

Nixon expected to call for Medicaid expansion, education funding

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon will deliver his annual State of the State address Tuesday night, during which he'll unveil his proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2015.

The governor is expected to announce funding increases for both K-12 schools and higher education, along with a warning to House and Senate GOP leaders not to cut taxes.  Nixon vetoed last year's tax cut bill (HB 253) and successfully fought off an attempted veto override last fall.  The Democratic governor is also expected to make another pitch for expanding Medicaid.

House Speaker To Deliver GOP Response To Governor's State Of State Address

Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones, R-Eureka, has been tapped to deliver the Republican response to next Tuesday’s State of the State address by Gov. Jay Nixon, a Democrat.

Jones had been on the short list for the response, usually delivered within minutes of the governor's annual speech. Others believed to be in the running had been Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, who has delivered the response several times since Nixon took office, and state Auditor Tom Schweich, who’s running for re-election this fall.

The governor outlines his legislative priorities during the speech and also releases his state budget proposal. Nixon plans to make his remarks at 7 p.m. to a joint session of the House and Senate.

Jefferson Day Care Center celebrates 'Missouri Start Smart' grant

Governor Jay Nixon was at the Jefferson Day Care Center yesterday promoting his plan to increase funding for pre-k education in Missouri.

The governor recently awarded two other grants to the Kansas City School District, to help provide access to quality education to children in day care before entering kindergarten. The governor's visit to the Jefferson City Day Care Center celebrated the day care center's participation in the so-called "Missouri Start Smart" grant initiative.

Nixon calls on lawmakers to broaden Medicaid coverage

Healthcare reform was on the agenda in Gov. Jay Nixon’s 2013 State of the State address as he called upon lawmakers to broaden Medicaid so more Missourians would have access to healthcare. Nixon’s proposed budget includes an expansion of Missouri’s Medicaid program. Estimates are the plan would add nearly 260,000 lower-income adults to the healthcare program through the use of $908 million in federal funds, money that would be received by opting in to the federal Medicaid expansion.

Mo. House speaker to give GOP response to Nixon

Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones will give the Republican response next week to Gov. Jay Nixon's State of the State speech.

The Democratic governor will address a joint session of the Legislature at 7 p.m. Monday in the House chamber.

The GOP response by Jones will be prerecorded and broadcast about five minutes after Nixon completes his speech.

Last year, Jones and Senate Appropriations Committee Kurt Schaefer gave a joint Republican response to Nixon's annual speech. The responsibility fell to Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder during the previous three years.
