A year after taking the office as University of Missouri system president, Tim Wolfe says the number one issue on his agenda is strategic planning.

University of Missouri System President Tim Wolfe announced a few changes to the organization of some administrative offices Wednesday. In a press release, Wolfe said he will consolidate the roles of Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs, which has been vacant for several years, and the Vice President of Economic Development.

UM System spokesperson Jennifer Hollingshead says the new person in this position will work with chief academic, research and economic development officers on all of the system campuses.

Students lobby UM Curators over coal power plant

Student advocacy group Coal Free Mizzou presented the MU Board of Curators today with 3,000 student signatures asking the University of Missouri to transition from coal to clean energy.

The University of Missouri is standing behind its cost-cutting decision to shutter the school's academic press.

Governor Jay Nixon’s withholdings announced Friday are expected to be felt by Missouri’s higher-education institutions. Nixon announced the removal of $9 million from the budgets of Missouri’s public colleges and universities, effective July 1st. It’s part of $15 million withheld from a budget Nixon says is $50 million out of balance. 

University of Missouri Press to be eliminated

The University of Missouri Press will close. That’s according to a press release issued today by the University of Missouri system. The UM system provides the University of Missouri Press with a $400,000 yearly subsidy, and according to the press release, the Press has been unable to operate without a deficit in recent years.

University of Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton spoke to the University of Missouri-Columbia Faculty Council Thursday before its regularly scheduled meeting. This was the council's first meeting since the University system's Board of Curators approved tuition increases that leave the system with a $47.1 million budget gap.

Today the University of Missouri System announced the recipients of a $600,000 investment in two university research teams. The money will be use to further commercialize and expand lab research, which could translate into economic growth in Missouri.

The University of Missouri's in-state undergraduates received a good news today.  The UM Board of Curators voted to hold tuition increases to three percent starting this fall.  In past weeks there was discussion of raising tuition by two or three times that much.  However, the proposed tuition increase will leave MU with a forty-seven million dollar budget gap.

Columbia attorney Craig Van Matre faces obstacles of time and partisan politics in his bid for a permanent seat on the UM System Board of Curators.

Craig Van Matre’s time is running out as a UM curator. He’s held the position since Governor Jay Nixon appointed him last June, but Missouri’s constitution requires a vote on his confirmation by Thursday. Some aren’t keen on making Van Matre a permanent board member.

UM System urges tuition increases

The UM system recommends curators approve an average tuition increase of 6.5 percent, with prices at the University of Missouri in Columbia spiking at as much as 7.5 percent.

State Rep. Chris Kelly (D - Columbia) says the decision is inevitable if the system wants to pay its expenses.

"The Governor's office left the Curators no choice but to go to tuition for money. The state's failing in its obligation, so we're transferring the cost of our education from students and their parents," Kelly said.
