Republican Sen. Roy Blunt is scheduled to be in St. Louis today to meet with officials at the VA hospital about concerns raised over mental health care. The visit comes amid calls from several Missouri politicians to address complaints about VA services. U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, visited the University of Missouri campus Friday to announce the results of her survey of veterans' satisfaction with VA services in Kansas City, St. Louis and Columbia.
The Centralia Kiwanis Club welcomed Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler to speak at their meeting on Thursday to go over key issues that could affect mid-Missouri voters. A Republican, Hartzler said she has and will continue to cut wasteful spending and work to balance the national budget.
Another key plank in the congresswoman's platform is protecting defense spending. In her short speech, Hartzler said, "What I discovered is that we could totally eliminate defense and every other program in Washington, D.C., and it still wouldn't balance the budget."
The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to cut $40 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, and some Missouri social welfare advocates are concerned about the impact of the cut on rural Missourians. SNAP, formerly food stamps, was already expected to receive a fund cut this November.

Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Cuong met with US Congressmember Vicky Hartzler, Columbia Mayor Bob McDavid and University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe to discuss the opportunities for trade between Missouri and Vietnam.
During the discussion, Hartzler noted that the demand for agricultural products in Vietnam presents an opportunity for Missouri producers.
