Three-term incumbent Centralia Mayor Tim Grenke defeated challengers Catherine Simmons and Farris Sanders last night. Grenke says he’s excited about the results and that Centralia citizens chose to keep him in office for another term.
“A three way race is always kind of apprehensive, not knowing which way it’s going to go,” Grenke said.
After months of campaigning, members of the Boone County Office of Emergency Management were finally able to celebrate after Proposition 1 passed with a majority. Supporters filled Bleu Restaurant and Wine Bar all night as the votes came in. The proposition will increase the sales tax in Boone County by 3/8’s of a cent and the money collected will go towards upgrades for 911 emergency communication services. Operations Manager at the Office of Emergency Management Joe Piper was so stunned by the victory he was speechless.
Skala reclaimed the position from incumbent Gary Kespohl with 54% of the votes. This redeems his narrow defeat to Kespohl in 2010, when Skala lost the seat by 54 votes. Kespohl knew that this time it would be close and estimated that he knocked on nearly 5700 doors.
In his concession speech, Kespohl was brief. “I’m afraid for Columbia now because of some things that Karl is going to try to do. It may drive development completely out of Columbia. I hope it doesn’t, but it may.”
