Governor Jay Nixon signs law offering tax breaks for some small businesses

Legislators last year approved a tax deduction for small businesses based on each job they add. This year's measure is designed to clarify the types of businesses that can claim the deduction.

Burn bans underway in central Missouri fire districts

Fire departments in several central Missouri cities have stopped issuing burn permits because of dry conditions and several have banned open fire burning all together. Columbia’s fire department issued a burn ban Tuesday morning. The department will not issue any burn permits and discourages any open burning such as bonfires. Officials say the low humidity and dry vegetation creates a high risk for fire.  The Stephens Lake Park and Kiwanis Park bonfire pit are closed for now.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development awarded state tax credits to five small business incubators on Monday. The Life Science Business Incubation Center in Columbia was awarded a $100,000 in tax credits.

New dental school targets Missouri's dentist shortage

About 20 percent of Missourians live in areas where there aren't enough dentists, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In Kirksville, the A.T. Still University is tackling the problem by building a new school of dentistry, which, in a few years, will be graduating dozens of new dentists each year.

Missouri stadium expansion wins approval

With less than a week before the University of Missouri officially enters the Southeastern Conference, the UM board of curators has approved the first half of a project that Athletic Director Mike Alden says will “change the face” of the University of Missouri sports park. At a regular meeting yesterday, curators approved the $102 million project to expand and update athletic facilities on the Columbia campus.
