Betsy Peters Elected Sixth Ward Columbia Councilperson

In a tight Columbia city council race between Sixth ward candidates Betsy Peters and Ryan Euliss, Peters edged out Euliss by a mere 35 votes. Although the candidates ran on similar issues, like increasing the amount of safety personnel and improving infrastructure, they differed in their approach to representing the Sixth ward.

Euliss who took a city-wide approach said the issues that the Sixth Ward faces are similar to the Columbia’s as whole.

“So a lot of the things the Sixth ward is dealing with is similar to entire city is dealing with,” Euliss said. “So simply stating that you just want to attack it on just your ward level. I mean it’s just not the focus that I need to have, but that doesn’t mean that you ignore the specific issues.”

But Peters said she wants to get back to the fundamentals of what really matters to her ward.

“We need to get back to the basics, the reason that people actually live in the city, so good streets, infrastructure, storm water, electricity, you know the things that we need as a city,” Peters said.

Sixth ward city councilwoman Barbara Hoppe, who chose not to run for reelection, said Peters thoughtful nature will benefit the community.
