Blair Oaks high school pays tribute to 9/11 victims
Blair Oaks High School Student Council President Ben Campbell led more than 60 of his classmates Wednesday morning to plant 2,976 flags outside of the school. Each flag represented a victim of the September 11th attacks. His goal was to remind the community about the importance of joining together as one nation on this day of remembrance.
“Well you know a lot of times you just talk about it or see it on TV, and you never really make it personal, but the fact is that it happened to us as a country, and we all still are one country,” Campbell said.
Campbell said he thought of the idea a few weeks ago in a student council meeting. He also said the school has received so much great feedback that they plan on doing it again next year.
“The reason it makes it a great idea is not because the act of placing the flags, but because our high school students were probably anywhere from two to six years old when this happened,” said Gary Verslues, principal of the school.
Student council paid for the flags and they plan on putting them to use again for their annual Veteran’s Day Memorial on November 11th.
