Boone County Rep. Reisch sparks backlash after tweet criticizes opponent over pledge

The ongoing debate over what qualifies as respect for national symbols reached the Twitter feeds of people following 44th District Rep. Cheri Toalson Reisch, R-Hallsville, on Friday after the Boone County Farm Bureau Strawberry Festival.

Reisch tweeted that she was honored to speak at the event and criticized her opponent in the upcoming House election, Maren Bell Jones, a Democrat, writing, “Sad my opponent put her hands behind her back during the Pledge.”

Some Twitter users called the tweet “petty,” “divisive” and a cheap shot, while others said they’d rather hear a debate on more substantial issues, such as funding for education.
