Breaking News Entry for PRNDI Awards

The events on the University of Missouri campus on November 9, 2015 made news worldwide, as UM System President Tim Wolfe resigned amidst protests by black students calling for his resignation. By the end of the day, MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin would also resign amidst pressure from faculty and students.

KBIA had more than a dozen reporters out in the field gathering material for our on air and online reporting of the story. KBIA carried both of the resignations live on our air, as well as updated our audience with hourly newscasts throughout the day with the latest information.  The same night as the resignation, KBIA aired a half hour edition of its talk show Intersection featuring the sounds of the day. KBIA also offered its audience more in-depth coverage of the issues with a four minute long roundup of the day’s events the evening of Nov 9. The following morning, KBIA also aired a first-person account by one of our reporters about his experience in the middle of the scrum of reporters that were confronted by demonstrators while trying to cover the story.

KBIA aired more than 2 hours of content related to these events in 24 hours. Our coverage has been shortened here to 15 minutes for the official submission, which is the audio embedded in the top of this post. Every story you hear in the audio above aired within 24 hours of the news breaking.

If you are interested in seeing more of KBIA’s coverage during and in the days following the resignations, you can view some of the highlights here on this supplemental link: http://kbia.org/term/mizzoubreaking
