Campus Reacts to UM System President's Resignation

Teachers and students who gathered in Carnahan Quad on the MU campus this morning celebrated the resignation of University of Missouri System President Tim Wolfe.

Cheers of glee erupted as protesters learned the news that Wolfe was stepping down. Faculty members and students walked out of classes to support the cause, led by the group Concerned Student 1950. The group has called for the removal or resignation of President Wolfe for months because of his lack of response to racist incidents on campus.

“I want you to know that this is a movement and not a moment,” Andrea Fulgiam, a member of Concern told the crowd after the news came down. “So I expect to see this all the time. We still have polices we have to implement. We don’t stop fighting because that’s what they want. We have to ensure campus will be okay for everyone and futures to come.”

Former student athlete Michael Sam came out to support Jonathan Butler who had been on a hunger strike and to support his former football teammates who joined in support.

“I want the best for Jonathan. I want to best for the African Americans on this campus. I love this school and I want the best for this school,” he said.

Wolfe said in his resignation he takes responsibility for the inaction.

“Use my resignation to heal and start talking again,” he said. “Let’s focus on what we can change today and in the future.”

The curators have not named an interim president just yet.
