Each year since 2005, the MU School of Music has put on a concert hosted by the chancellor. This year's version of the Chancellor's Art Showcase is next Monday, April 13. For the 2015 version, the school's Director Julia Gaines has cast a wider net for the concert including for the first time student art from MU scholars creating outside the School of Music.
Next Monday's event kicks off with the presentation of the annual Sinquefeld Prize to Trey Makler. The MU junior and oboist's new work whatever we lose will have a world premiere performed by the University Philharmonic. The event also features a performance by the MU Legion of Black Collegians Gospel Choir.
Next Monday isn't any old Monday though. It happens to be the 272nd anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson. This coincidence wasn't lost on organizers of the Chancellor's Arts Showcase. They are embracing the connection with Jefferson's birth. Musicologist Michael Budds will offer commentary during the evening about the significance of America's second president to the University of Missouri.
The connection between Jefferson and MU will be on display when the Show Me Opera performs a pair of scenes from Michael Ching's vocal work Corps of Discovery. Also included is a scene from MU Department of Theatre graduate student Chris Oliver's musical 1776.
When planning the annual School of Music event, Gaines reached out to the MU Department of Theatre among others. In addition to the evening's performing arts the Missouri Theatre Monday will host a panel created by MU Textile and Apparel Management senior Stephanie Sunberg.
Creations at the showcase will also include Mizzou Botanic Garden-sponsored floral arrangements from the hands of MU and Columbia Area Career Center student designers.
The MU Chancellor's Arts Showcase is at 7:30p.m. next Monday, April 13 at Columbia's Missouri Theatre. Tickets are $10.
