City of Fulton Approves Half-Cent Sales Tax in Municipal Election

Downtown Fulton
KBIA

In last night’s municipal election Fulton residents approved a half cent sales-tax that will generate funding for city wide projects and to make improvements to the city’s storm water management system.

Fulton Interim City Engineer, Kyle Bruemmer, said he wasn't sure how the community would vote on the sales tax heading into last night’s election.

“You know with all of our public meetings it seemed kind of split. So, I was maybe a little surprised and overwhelmed by the election results and how positive it was,” Bruemmer said.

He said this Fulton sales-tax will bring in around roughly $700,000.

With Tuesday’s approval he believes about $350,000 will go toward the city’s efforts to comply with the storm water regulations enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency, and the other $350,000 will go toward the city of Fulton’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Bruemmer said the Parks and Recreation Department plans to use the money to build a community center and baseball complex.

Another of the City of Fulton’s main is restoring Stinson Creek, which is currently listed as an impaired stream.

“We’ve recently had a 2015 audit by the Department of Natural Resources and we were out of compliance on several issues. So one of the main priorities is getting us into compliance,” Bruemmer said.
