Lunch prices at Columbia Public Schools will rise next year

May 14, 2012

The price of student lunches will go up 10 cents starting in the fall of 2012. A 2010 federal requirement says school districts must generate enough revenue to pay for the cost of lunches themselves.

Rock Bridge High School director of guidance Betsy Jones says she doesn’t think the price change will be an issue for most families.

“Still, a school lunch at its cost is way less than what it would cost a family to pack a lunch or for a high school student to purchase a lunch outside of the building.”

Prices will be $2. 50 at secondary schools and $2.25 at elementary schools. Both breakfast and adult lunches will stay at their current prices: $1.35 and $3.00 respectively.
