Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander announced in a press release Thursday morning that he will run for the U.S. Senate in 2016. If he wins the Democratic nomination, he would likely face incumbent Republican Senator Roy Blunt.

Kander was elected Secretary of State in 2012, after serving in the state legislature after his return from Afghanistan in 2007 as a member of the Army.

Kander's announcement included mention of endorsements from fellow Democrats U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, Governor Jay Nixon, Attorney General Chris Koster and Treasurer Clint Zweifel.

His campaign website is now live, and he also released this video announcement Thursday:

“For years, even with our economy suffering at home and our national security threatened abroad, too many politicians in both political parties have been more concerned with scoring political points than doing what’s right for our country,” he says. Kandor adds “We can’t change Washington if we don’t change the people we send there.”
