Police Department Report Details Racially Charged Incident Involving MU Fraternity

The University of Missouri Police Department’s report on a racially charged incident on MU’s campus Tuesday night was published Thursday by the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch. The paper obtained the report through a records request.

MU administrators temporarily suspended Delta Upsilon Fraternity for its members’ alleged involvement in an incident where African American students reported being called racial slurs. Statements published by the Post-Dispatch show the officers did not hear racial slurs coming from the fraternity house, but that other witnesses reported hearing them.

“The investigation is being conducted by the Student Conduct office and the Title IX office,” MUPD Major Brian Weimer said. “Our report has been shared with them.”

“The university police department is not looking at any criminal activity,” he said.

On Wednesday, MU’s Legion of Black Collegians issued a statement saying that before the events outside Delta Upsilon, two of the Legion’s members were called a racial slur by a white student. Later, according to the Legion’s statement, fraternity members directed obscenities at Legion members.

Major Weimer says MUPD will assist the Office for Civil Rights &Title IX and the Office of Student Conduct.

MU’s Legion of Black Collegians hosted a town hall Wednesday night at the Gaines-Oldham Black Culture Center. Major Weimer and other university administrators were in attendance.

Sean Earl, president of the Missouri Students Association, says it’s important students speak out about the incident.

“When we continue to be silent on these issues, it’s actually not making it any better. It’s actually making it worse,” Earl said.
