Post-tornado rebuilding efforts in Joplin bring record-high population total

After the devastating EF-5 tornado swept through Joplin in 2011, some thought the southewest Missouri town would never regain its footing.

Less than five years later, Joplin has not only gained back he population that was lost in and after the May 22nd, 2011 twister, but also has reached its highest total ever.

Major new employers have arrived, most of the damaged businesses have rebuilt and 250 new ones have opened since the tornado.

Mayor Mike Siebert says the success is due to the community's commitment to immediately rebound from the tornado, which killed 161 people, injured hundred and damaged or destroyed about 8,000 homes and businesses.
