Supreme Court Decision Opens Door for Online Sales Tax

Missouri could impose a tax on online purchases as soon as next year, increasing funding for Columbia city services and infrastructure, city officials said.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday state governments could require online retailers to remit sales tax to the state that a buyer lives in. Taxing online sales is a potential solution to Columbia’s budget problems, City Manager Mike Matthes said in his “State of the City” address June 1.

For the online sales tax to become a reality in Missouri, the state legislature first must pass a bill approving it, said Rep. Kip Kendrick, D-Columbia.

Kendrick is the ranking minority member of the House Budget committee. He said Tuesday he supports imposing the tax.
